“Parallel societies”, “teenager gangs”, “Rütli School”, “no-go areas”, “dead end”: In the past ten years no other district in Berlin has been the subject of so many buzz phrases and projections of fear throughout the whole country like the Berlin district of Neukölln. Neukölln is complex, and it is everything but homogeneous. It is an array of urban residence areas in the Wilhelminian style, of suburban settlements with an almost rural character of villages, and of satellite towns from the planning offices of the Bauhaus School. Trend experts have now declared Neukölln to be “the most exciting district in the capital”, and urban sociologists see first signs of a phenomenon called gentrification. This only seems to be a contradiction. After excursions to the quarters of Märkisches Viertel and Schöneberg (“Suburbs”, 2005) “X Wohnungen” now saw reason enough to explore this area between Maybachufer and Rudow which even to many Berliners is only known through prejudices. With the means of the theatre we will investigate the domestic hopes and dreams of the people. (andcompany&Co)
